Lucia Whalen Should Apologize Too!

The story about Prof. Henry Louis Gates Jr. being arrested at his home in Cambridge, MA is complicated. Liberal Cambridge is racist and black folks who live there know it well. I am one of them.
Well, one Lucia Whalen (40) said that she saw two black males with backpacks attempting to break into the house. And supposedly she also said that as far as she knew no black people lived in that house. She even waited for the police to show up, I guess expecting to be labelled some kind of hero. Ware St. is posh and expensive indeed, as well as most of Cambridge.
Well, let me just say this, I appreciate people looking out for their neighbor's houses, but her description of the two black males is just so so bigoted. Not only, that it could have led to people getting shot unnecessarily.
Turns out, Prof. Gates, had just returned from a trip to China. It was 12:30pm. He was wearing a blue blazer, his chaffeur was wearing a black suit. Neither had a back pack. There was a Lincoln Town car parked out front and three pieces of luggage on the porch. HELLO Lucia!
This reminds me of the image they show people for two seconds. Someone stabbing someone else. The bulk of the time, white folks will say that it was a black man stabbing a white man. In reality it is a black man getting stabbed by the white man. Whites like Lucia have bigotry programmed into them.
Let's see what that Harvard alumni magazine that Lucia works for needs says about this incident. People offended should not send in any donations as protest.
And to the white folks who keep telling us black folks to 'get over it', I say, try living as a black person for a week. Then see if you feel the same. We'll get over it, when white folks see us a ordinary human beings!

He has black hair and was dressed in a two-piece black suit, and I was dressed in a navy blue blazer with gray trousers and, you know, my shoes. And I love that the 911 report said that two big black men were trying to break in with backpacks on. Now that is the worst racial profiling I’ve ever heard of in my life. (Laughs.) I’m not exactly a big black man. I thought that was hilarious when I found that out, which was yesterday.

You are so correct! Lucia needs to apologize, too, to her neighbor, and to both the black and the white communities. To the black community for the strife, and to the white community for embarrassing us.

Yeah, she waited…I’m not sure if the police asked her to, but if she wanted notoriety, she should get it. I want to know more abut how she could make such a bone-headed mistake.
I hope Professor Gates continues to speak out on this. So far he has not called Lucia out. I want to know how she feels about her mistake: Justified? Embarrassed? Sorry? Changed?
I want this to be a catalyst for white people to finally “get” it, but judging from the comments I’m reading in reaction to the stories, sadly, far too many don’t, and even take it further down the road of bigotry.
And now it is Lucia Whalen who should apologize? From the ridiculous to the absurd. If I didn’t happen to spot your offensive posting on Google, I would never have believed it.
I guess you’re right, Lucia should apologize because she called the authorities after witnessing two men forcing there way into her neighbor’s house. She should apologize because she described the men as being black. Correct me if I’m wrong but Mr. Gates is black (Gee, maybe I should apologize for making such a racist assumption).
The police officer should apologize for doing his job, responding to a call that a house was being broken into. He should apologize for making sure that Gate’s own property was well protected.
I am sorry to disappoint you, but this is not an issue of race. This is an issue of a citizen behaving irresponsibly and a police officer overreacting to it.
But then again the real issue wouldn’t give you cause to post such inflammatory material on the Internet and thus give you any satisfaction in your narrow-minded thinking.
First, I cannot imagine that Lucia Whalen is so ignorant that she failed to recognize the internationally-renowned professor. Can you imagine someone doing this if the distinguished professor at Harvard were white? How could she be a neighbor and have no idea he lived there? The descriptions are racist- “back packs” when none were worn. The livery driver was carrying Gates’ heavy suitcases. When was the last time 2 robbers took suitcases along with them. If this were a white person, she and the cops would have assumed he was locked out or at least inquired if there was a problem, not called 911 right away.
Gates had every right to be indignant, given the treatment of black people in this country. The cop could have just done a reverse lookup by radio once he had ID, and should have backed off then and there.
I’m relieved to to see someone finally pointing out that Lucia Whalen is culpable here. I would actually go so far as to say that it is she–and not the police officer–who ought, ultimately, to be held accountable for what happened to Dr. Gates. All the focus in the media has been on Crowley, who–although I do not agree with his decision to arrest Dr. Gates, since Dr. Gates had every right to be angry–had an obligation to look into this report of suspected burglary. As both Whalen and Dr. Gates are employees of Harvard, perhaps Harvard could address the matter internally. I don’t know if there’s a mechanism in place for doing that. I’d be interested in hearing others’ thoughts on this.
I can’t imagine that Carol Lipton is so ignorant to confuse the term “internationally-renowned” with “famous” or “recognizeable”
I’m glad to see there are so many expert witnesses and former police commenting out there these days who, through the power of hindsight, could have told Whalen, Gates, and Crowley precisely how to behave in a lousy situation.
A ton of international-renowned professors live in the Boston area. I would bet that a majority of their neighbors don’t know who they are. I like in a townhouse community with 24 units, and can name the occupations of only 2 of my neighbors. Yes, shame on me for not knowing my neighbors better, but most of us are the same way. I think that it’s easy for academics to think they’re more important and recognizable than they are outside of close academic circles.
Gates was not arrested for burglary, but for disorderly conduct when he followed Sergaent Crowley outside. His behavior is written up in the police report and collaborated by other police officers and onlookers. Importantly, Sergaent Leon Lashley, the black officer on the scene, said he supported the arrest for disorderly conduct 100%.
If Bates were white and not an academic, there is no way his charges would have been dropped.

It sounds to me from this article and many other examples in my life that there are bigots on all sides of racial issues. This article is a good example of a bigot from the black side of the issue.
This arrest should be a complete non-issue. The guy broke into his own house, a neighbor saw the break in and naturally thought it was an intruder, she called the police and they naturally requested ID.
There is an example of the police responding to a break in call in my area where the homeowner answered the door and tried to wave the police off. When the cop looked to to the side and saw through the crack in the door that an intruder was hiding behind the door with a gun to the occupants head.
They followed protocol from what I can tell in this case and Mr. Gates is the only bigot in that situation trying to devolve this into a racial issue when it is most certainly not. He should apologize to the cops and to the country for his behavior (his behavior is about on par with my 4 year old son). Some “internationally-renowned” professor. Way to represent the educators in our country, he owes us all an apology.

In fact, Whalen did not describe “two black males” breaking into a house. She volunteered no racial description at all when she called. (When she was then asked by a police dispatcher to describe the two men, Whalen said “one looked kind of Hispanic, but I’m not really sure.”) Whalen didn’t even say the two men were trying to break into the house.
Here, from the actual 911 tape, is what she said: “I don’t know what’s happening. I don’t know if they live there and they just had a hard time with their key, but I did notice they had to use their shoulders to try to barge in.”

As for my two cents, even IF she had described the men as black, that’s not racist. She saw two men breaking into a home, and she didn’t know whether they had any business breaking in. In the law, they call that reasonable cause. She then did what any good neighbor would do: She called the police and reported what she saw. There would have been nothing at all wrong with her providing a physical description of the men – pointing out their clothing, their backpacks, their hair color, their height, and, yes, their skin color. There’s nothing racist to that; her fear that they were intruders was based on their actions; after that, there’s nothing wrong with providing an accuate description.
I’m gay – and I get sick of gay people who see “homophobia” and “oppression” everywhere they look. The reality is that they’re usually just being drama queens and trying to add some excitement/importance to their lives by pretending to be caught up in some grand struggle against discrimination. I suspect that sort of narcisism surrounds racial issues as well.

I for one have a very racist neighbor. I have no problem with my other neighbor. He constantly knocks on my door yelling ni**er this and ni**er that. When he had his heart attack, I didn’t even feel bad for him. When he broke his hip, I didn’t even give him the time of day.

I don’t know if they had a key or not, because I couldn’t see from my angle. But when I looked in closely that’s what I saw.

It would appear that Roger Simon at Politico has taken the time to do the kind of careful analysis that is utterly lacking in this blog post by Chemi Che-Mponda (which is also available at http://chemiche.blogspot.com/2009/07/lucia-whalen-should-apologize-too.html). But, never to miss an opportunity to blame someone else for her own vicious imprudence, Ms. Che-Mponda writes in her more recent blog post: “Cambridge police need to apologize to Ms. Whalen, she has been defamed. It’s that police report that caused her to be villified. I wish she had spoken up sooner, then again we really don’t know what kind of intimidation she was facing.”
Uh, “… we really don’t know what kind of intimidation she was facing”? Ms. Che-Mponda, you can’t be serious. We know exactly what kind of intimidation she was facing, because you have been among those in her face for more than a week helping to lead the mob against her so that, according to Ms. Whalen, “People called me racist and said I caused all the turmoil that followed, and some even said threatening things that made me fear for my safety.” Don’t you think you should apologize for your role in that, Ms. Che-Mponda?
It appears at this point the closest thing we’re going to get to an apology from Ms. Che-Mponda for accusing Lucia Whalen of being “so bigoted” and having that bigotry “programmed” into her is her dodge that the Cambridge police report caused her to make those remarks. So Ms. Che-Mponda would have us believe that her defamatory insults are the fault of the writer of that report and Ms. Che-Mponda has no responsibility whatsoever for the hurt she caused Ms. Whalen. Ms. Che-Mponda even goes so far to acknowledge that Ms. Whalen has been defamed, but there is not even a hint of acknowledgement that Ms. Che-Mponda was one of the people doing that defaming.
After all, is this not America? Does not Ms. Che-Mponda have the right to verbally accost (in print or otherwise) anyone she believes may have said or done anything that is offensive to her? Does she not have the right of even climbing up into her ebony tower and demeaning an entire ethnic group by writing, “I am seriously laughing at Ms. Whalen’s claim through her attorney that she is olive skinned and of Portuguese decent. Portugal is in Europe and its people are classified as ‘caucausian’,” as she did in her “Gatesgate 911 Tapes” post on her own blog? Apparently Ms. Che-Mponda is ignorant of the history of discrimination against people of Portuguese ancestry in the Northeast United States—but why should that be any impediment to her sardonic laughter?
And now Ms. Che-Mponda has the gall to write, “Meanwhile, I think the FBI needs to get to the bottom of this. A race riot almost started because of this incident.” Sure, let’s turn loose the FBI on this ridiculous spectacle that people like you helped to created. And when they get to the bottom of it, that’s just what they’ll find: people like you.
Chemi Che-Mponda, YOU are programmed to be a hateful, bigoted racist. You are also a coward of the highest order. Now that Ms. Whalen has been exonerated, you are STILL trying to villify her by saying “She should have come forward sooner”. It’s still HER fault that you were forced to slander her name. Your arrogance and ignorance are astounding.
What you know about other races and ethnic groups other than your own wouldn’t even top off a thimble. You have no higher claim to being persecuted than any other racial or ethnic group. (By the way, there are multiple ethic groups that HAVE been treated horribly which you sneeringly classify as “white”.)
Come out and admit you were wrong. Admit you wanted Ms. Whalen to be what you consider “racist” so you can continue justifying your hate and intolerance toward Caucasians. Admit that you prefer to be the victim who has been held down by “whitey”. You perpetuate the cycle of hatred and intolerance.
I would say this blog is damaging your credibility, and chances for employment, but the truth is, you would scream discrimination if you were denied a job based on the vomit you spew for all to read. Never admitting the fact that you are indeed an asshole.
