Muhimu: New Nigerian email scam: “Emergency appeal!!!”

July 31, 2008

Hello Colleagues,

Please be aware that the Nigerian spammers have developed a new approach, which is hurting may people these days. The only way to defeat this approach is simply for all of us to be informed about their tricks.

It begins with someone sending you an e-mail that claims to have been sent by your email service administrator, to inform you that they are migrating all client e-mails to another server. The email then requests you to send your user-name and password for that purpose.

Once you have sent the information, the impostor quickly changes your password, so can no longer access your account, and then sends out emails such as the one hereunder to everyone in your addressbook. As you can see from the message below, there may be subsequent financial implications for you if any kind-hearted friend actually carries out the request to assist you. And in the meantime, you lose your archive, addressbook, and incoming correspondence.

So be careful and NEVER send your user-name/password to anyone by email. If you must share your details, then use either encryption or SMS. And bear in mind that email system administrators do not require your password in order to carry out their functions. Finally, if you should ever receive an email like the one below, please remember not to panic and rush off to send those dollars.

Apologies to anyone who may receive multiple copies of this posting.

Regards,

DS.

I have gone through the same situation and my email id has been hacked exactly in the same way. My all friends received exactly the same email requesting them to send the money .But my friends were intelligent enough to tell me about the hacker’s plan. And yes I had to suffer due to my hacked Email Id and I had to make a new one. I just want to know that if you people know all this, why you dont take some action against them or why police does not do anything?

Such people should be behind the bars.

Yes, same happened to a friend of mine. A new kind of spam I hadn`t known yet, some Googling though led me to Jambo Network`s enlightening warning, thanks very much.

As regards Reema’s comment above, I appreciate the ‘behind bars’ idea but am afraid that a bunch of dollars in a number of countries allow you do do whatever you feel like.

the same here – email has come from a friend “who is now in Nigeria in distress”!
I could guess after some minutes of reading it that this is a new type of scam and then found your web site. Thank you for educating people.
